Sri Lanka's Most Scenic Train Journeys

The hill-country railway was originally built during the British colonial era.

Today it takes travelers through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Asia.

The journey feels cinematic because the train moves slowly through constantly changing scenery. Tea pickers work on steep green slopes, waterfalls flash between trees, vegetable gardens cling to hillsides, and small stations appear in the mist.

For many travelers, the train is not just transport between Kandy, Nanu Oya, Haputale, and Ella. It is one of the main experiences of the trip, and it often becomes the story they talk about first when describing Sri Lanka.

Travelers who do not want the full journey can break it into shorter sections. Kandy to Nanu Oya is useful for Nuwara Eliya, Nanu Oya to Haputale offers dramatic highland views, and Haputale to Ella is a shorter ride with beautiful mountain scenery.

Reserved seats are the most comfortable option, especially during busy seasons. Second class reserved is popular for atmosphere and open windows, while first class can be more comfortable but less immersive depending on the carriage.

Clear mornings often provide the best views across the hill country, while afternoons can bring mist, rain, or dramatic clouds. Even when the weather changes, the route remains atmospheric and photogenic.

If photography is important, choose a daylight departure and avoid late trains that reach the most scenic sections after dark. During peak travel months, book seats as early as possible because popular departures can sell out.

Pack light for the carriage and keep essentials close. A small day bag with water, snacks, a power bank, light jacket, tissues, and hand sanitizer will make the ride more comfortable.

The hill country can feel cool even when the coast is hot, so layers are useful. If you plan to photograph from windows or doors, use a wrist strap and stay aware of passing branches, tunnels, and platform edges.

Food sellers may board at stations, but availability varies by train and route. Bringing your own snacks is the easiest way to relax and enjoy the views without depending on station stops.
