Once you've decided to become a licensed Sri Lankan tour guide, the next question is which licence to actually pursue. National, Chauffeur, and Area guide licences are all issued by the SLTDA, but they differ enough in cost, time commitment, and where they let you work that the choice matters.

Area Tourist Guide, in brief

Requires a G.C.E. Ordinary Level pass in four subjects, completion of a roughly 200-hour training course, and permanent residency in the province you'll be licensed for.

Run through each province's own Department of Trade, Commerce and Tourism rather than SLITHM centrally.

Can you upgrade later?

Yes, and this is worth knowing before you commit to the cheaper route. Five or more years of experience as a licensed Chauffeur Tourist Guide, or eight or more years as a licensed Area Tourist Guide, both count as a qualifying path into the National Tourist Guide Lecturer course — without needing the A/L or degree requirement.

In practice, this means starting with an Area licence isn't a dead end: it's a legitimate, lower-cost way into the profession that can lead to a National licence later, once you've built up real guiding experience.
