The Perfect 2-Week Sri Lanka Itinerary for 2026/27 (Updated for the Rail Closures)

Two weeks is the most common trip length for first-time visitors to Sri Lanka. It is long enough to see ancient cities, tea country, wildlife and beaches without rushing every day.

The problem is that many popular itineraries are out of date. They still include the train from Kandy to Ella, which has not run as a through service since Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025.

This itinerary is built for the 2026/27 season as it really is. It keeps the best scenic train section, Nanu Oya to Ella, and replaces the closed parts with sensible road legs.

We have kept the pace realistic. Sri Lankan roads are slow, distances look short on a map but take hours, and travellers who move every day often end their trip tired. This route avoids that.

Кратко

  • Route: Negombo → Sigiriya → Kandy → Nuwara Eliya → Ella → Yala → South coast → Airport
  • The Kandy to Ella train is replaced by road to Nanu Oya plus the open Nanu Oya to Ella train
  • Best season for this route: December to April
  • Most travellers use a private driver; public transport is possible but slower
  • Plan 13 nights with no more than one long drive per day
  • Leave one buffer day for rain or train delays

The Route at a Glance

Day 1: Arrive and rest near the airport (Negombo).

Days 2 to 4: Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa (3 nights based near Sigiriya or Habarana).

Days 5 to 6: Kandy (2 nights).

Day 7: Road to Nuwara Eliya (1 night).

Days 8 to 9: Morning train from Nanu Oya to Ella, then Ella (2 nights).

Day 10: Drive to Yala area for an afternoon safari (1 night).

Days 11 to 13: South coast beaches, Mirissa or Tangalle, and Galle (3 nights).

Day 14: Return to the airport via the Southern Expressway.

Day 1: Arrive and Rest in Negombo

Most international flights land at Bandaranaike International Airport near Negombo. Many arrive late at night or early morning.

Stay your first night in Negombo, which is close to the airport. Rest, have a swim, and walk along the beach or lagoon in the evening.

Before you arrive, make sure your entry approval is done only through the official government ETA website. Fake visa websites charge extra fees.

Buy a local SIM card at the airport and withdraw some rupees. Many small shops and tuk-tuks prefer cash.

Days 2–4: Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa

Drive from Negombo to the Sigiriya or Habarana area. This usually takes around 4 hours. Stop at Dambulla Cave Temple on the way if time allows.

Day 3: Climb Sigiriya early in the morning to avoid heat and crowds. The Central Cultural Fund lists foreign visitor entry at USD 35. In the afternoon, rest or climb Pidurangala Rock for sunset views of Sigiriya.

Day 4: Visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa by bicycle or with a driver. In the late afternoon, consider a jeep safari in Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park, depending on where the elephants are.

If you love history, you can swap Polonnaruwa for Anuradhapura, but it is a longer drive.

Three nights here gives you time to rest after your flight and to enjoy the area without rushing.

Days 5–6: Kandy

Drive from Sigiriya to Kandy, usually around 3 hours, with an optional stop at a spice garden near Matale.

Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, and arrive for one of the daily puja ceremonies if you want to see the temple at its busiest.

Walk around Kandy Lake, visit the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, and see a Kandyan cultural dance show in the evening.

Note: Kandy railway station is not connected to train services right now. Trains from Colombo stop at Peradeniya, a short distance away. For this route, you will leave Kandy by road.

Day 7: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya by Road

This is the leg most old itineraries do by train. For now, travel by road. The drive to Nuwara Eliya usually takes around 3 to 4 hours.

The road climbs through tea estates and passes waterfalls such as Ramboda Falls. Stop at a tea factory to see how Ceylon tea is made.

In Nuwara Eliya, walk around Gregory Lake, see the colonial-style buildings, and enjoy the cool air. Bring a warm layer for the evening.

Staying one night here means you can catch the morning train from nearby Nanu Oya the next day, without a very early start from Kandy.

Days 8–9: The Train From Nanu Oya to Ella

Take a tuk-tuk to Nanu Oya station for the morning train to Ella. This section reopened on 20 June 2026 and is the most scenic part of the whole line.

The ride usually takes around 3 hours, but delays are common. Book a reserved seat early through the official Sri Lanka Railways online system. If seats are sold out, unreserved tickets are sold at the station.

In Ella, walk to Nine Arches Bridge and climb Little Adam's Peak. Ella Rock is a longer hike for fit walkers; going with a local guide is wise.

Ella is busy and lively. If you prefer quiet, stay a little outside the main street.

If your trip is in December, Ella can be cloudy and wet. Keep your plans flexible and do hikes in the morning.

Day 10: Ella to Yala for a Safari

Drive down from the hills to the Tissamaharama or Kataragama area, near Yala National Park. The drive usually takes around 2.5 to 3 hours and passes Ravana Falls.

Take an afternoon jeep safari. Yala is famous for leopards, but also has elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and many birds. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Yala's main zones reopened on 16 October 2026 after their seasonal closure. They are normally open through the winter season.

If you prefer elephants over leopards, Udawalawe National Park is an alternative and is easier to reach from Ella in some routes.

Days 11–13: The South Coast

Drive west along the coast to Tangalle (quiet beaches) or Mirissa (more lively), usually 1.5 to 2.5 hours from Yala.

From November to April, take an early-morning whale watching trip from Mirissa. Choose an operator that respects distance rules and does not chase the whales.

Spend your last full day in Galle. Walk the Galle Fort ramparts at sunset, explore the old streets, and visit the lighthouse.

These three nights are your rest time. Do not fill them with too many tours. Swimming, eating good seafood and watching sunsets is the point.

Day 14: Back to the Airport

From Galle, the Southern Expressway and the airport expressway make the trip to the airport usually around 2.5 to 3 hours.

Leave plenty of time for traffic, especially around Colombo on weekdays and during the Christmas to New Year period.

If your flight is late at night, you can spend the day in Galle or stop at Colombo on the way.

Private Driver or Public Transport?

Most first-time visitors on a two-week trip hire a car with a driver. It is the easiest way to follow this route, especially while the hill country train is partly closed.

Hiring a driver costs more than buses, but saves time, makes luggage easy, and lets you stop at viewpoints and tea factories.

Public transport is possible and very cheap. Buses connect every stop on this route. Expect slower travel, crowded buses, and less room for luggage.

A mix also works well: driver for the long legs, the train from Nanu Oya to Ella, and tuk-tuks for short trips.

Always agree on prices, what is included (fuel, driver accommodation, parking, tolls) and daily hours before you start.

How to Adjust This Route by Season

December to April: the route works as written. This is the best time for the south coast and the Cultural Triangle.

May to September: the southwest monsoon brings rain and rough seas to the south and west coasts. Swap the south coast for the east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikudah or Arugam Bay).

October to November: this is the inter-monsoon period, when rain is possible across the island. The route still works, but keep extra buffer days.

Late December to early January: expect higher prices and crowds. Book everything early.

If You Have 10 Days Instead

Cut one night in the Cultural Triangle, skip the Yala night (do a safari at Udawalawe on the way to the coast instead), and spend two nights on the south coast instead of three.

Do not try to squeeze the full route into a week. Long daily drives will leave you more tired than happy.

If you only have one week, choose two regions only, such as the Cultural Triangle plus Kandy, or the hill country plus the south coast.

Частые вопросы

Is two weeks enough for Sri Lanka?

Yes. Two weeks is enough to see the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the hill country, a national park and the south coast at a comfortable pace.

Can I still take the Kandy to Ella train in 2026/27?

Not as a direct service as of early November 2026. You can travel by road from Kandy to Nanu Oya and then take the train from Nanu Oya to Ella, which is the most scenic section.

What is the best month for this itinerary?

December to April is usually best for this route, because the Cultural Triangle, hill country and south coast are generally drier during these months.

Do I need a private driver?

No, but it makes this route much easier, especially with the train partly closed. Buses connect all stops and are cheap, but slower and crowded.

Should I go clockwise or anticlockwise?

Clockwise (culture first, beach last) works well for most travellers. You end your trip resting on the beach, and you see the inland sites while you are fresh.

How much does Sigiriya cost to enter?

The Central Cultural Fund lists foreign visitor entry to Sigiriya at USD 35. Prices can change, so check before you visit.

Can I add the east coast?

From December to April, the east coast is usually wet early in the season and best later. If you travel from May to September, swap the south coast for the east coast.

Is this itinerary good for families?

Yes. The pace includes rest time, and most activities suit children. Choose shorter hikes in Ella and book reserved train seats for comfort.

Where should I fly into and out of?

Fly into and out of Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo. This loop starts and ends there.
