When to go, month by month

Sri Lanka's season calendar.

Two monsoons run the island on opposite schedules, so there is almost always a dry coast somewhere. See what each month looks like for weather, festivals and wildlife before you build your itinerary.

How to read the calendar

Each month below shows the general outlook for four regions. Sri Lanka's weather is local and can shift within a single day, so treat this as a planning guide, not a forecast - check live conditions closer to your trip.

Match your trip to the season that suits it.

Beaches, wildlife, surf and hill country all peak at different times of year. Pick what matters most to you.

Beaches & whale watching

The west and south coasts (Bentota to Mirissa) are calmest and driest, and this is also the reliable whale-watching window.

Best: December - March

Wildlife safaris

Dry-season waterholes concentrate leopards and elephants in Yala and Udawalawe; the Minneriya elephant gathering peaks in the middle of the year.

Best: February - June, and July - September for the elephant gathering

Surfing

Arugam Bay and the east coast have the most consistent swell when the west coast is in monsoon, and vice versa - Sri Lanka is a year-round surf destination if you pick the right coast.

Best: May - September (east coast), November - April (south/west coast)

Explore surf breaks

Hill country & hiking

Ella, Horton Plains and the tea country stay cool year-round but are driest and clearest outside the two monsoon peaks.
