Getting Around Sri Lanka: Transport & Connectivity
Updated July 8, 2026 · By the LankaTrip team
Sri Lanka is compact — most journeys between major stops take two to six hours — but roads are slow and winding, so distances take longer than maps suggest.
Here is how each transport option actually works, including the famous train and the practical details nobody tells you.
Trains — including the hill country ride to Ella
The hill country railway to Ella is one of the world's great train journeys and costs only a few dollars. Important: as of July 2026, through trains from Kandy are not running — service currently operates on the Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) to Ella section, which is also the most scenic stretch of the line. From Kandy, travel to Nanu Oya by road and board there. Check the current service status when you plan.
Reserved seats (1st and 2nd class) sell out quickly — often as soon as booking opens about 30 days ahead — especially in peak season. Book early online through authorized sellers or at major stations. If seats are gone, unreserved 2nd/3rd class carriages always have space if you board early — standing for a stretch with open doors and highland views is part of the experience for many travelers.
Private drivers
Hiring a car with a driver is the most popular way to cover a full itinerary. Expect roughly US$50–80 per day including the vehicle, fuel, and the driver's accommodation, depending on vehicle and season. A knowledgeable driver-guide doubles as a travel companion — this is exactly what LankaTrip's verified local guides offer.
Buses, tuk-tuks, and ride-hailing
- Buses reach everywhere and cost almost nothing, but are crowded and fast-driven — fine for short hops, tiring for long hauls.
- Tuk-tuks are ideal for short distances. Agree the price first, or use PickMe (Sri Lanka's main ride-hailing app, which also books tuk-tuks at metered rates).
- Airport transfers: pre-book a hotel pickup, use the airport taxi counters, or PickMe. Negombo is only ~20 minutes from the airport, making it a common first-night base.
SIM cards & connectivity
Buy a tourist SIM at the arrivals hall of Bandaranaike International Airport — Dialog and Mobitel counters sell packages with generous data for a few dollars. Dialog generally has the widest coverage. eSIM options are also available through the local operators and international eSIM apps. 4G coverage is good in towns and most tourist areas, patchier in national parks and deep hill country.
Frequently asked questions
How do I book the hill country train to Ella?
As of July 2026, through trains from Kandy are suspended — the scenic service currently runs between Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) and Ella. Reserved seats open for booking about 30 days ahead and sell out fast in peak season; book through Sri Lanka Railways' authorized online sellers or at a major station counter. Unreserved carriages always have room if you board early.
Can tourists drive in Sri Lanka?
Yes, but you need both an International Driving Permit and a local recognition permit, and traffic is chaotic by most visitors' standards. Most travelers find a driver or public transport easier; self-driving tuk-tuk rentals with proper permits have become popular with adventurous visitors.
How long does it take to travel between cities?
Plan around average speeds of 30–50 km/h. Colombo to Kandy is roughly 3–4 hours by road or train; Kandy to Ella is a full-day leg by road plus the Nanu Oya–Ella train; Colombo to Galle about 1.5–2 hours via the southern expressway.
