Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka

Updated July 8, 2026 · By the LankaTrip team

Sri Lanka has no single "best season" — it has two. Because two different monsoons affect opposite sides of the island at different times, somewhere in Sri Lanka is almost always sunny.

The trick is matching your route to the season, and this guide shows you how.

The two monsoons, simply

The southwest (Yala) monsoon brings rain to the south and west coasts and the hill country roughly from May to September. The northeast (Maha) monsoon affects the north and east roughly from October to January.

That means the classic southern route — Colombo, Galle, Mirissa, and the hill country — is at its best from about December to April, while the east coast — Trincomalee and Arugam Bay — shines from about May to September.

Where to go, when

  • December–April: south and west coasts (Galle, Mirissa, Bentota), cultural triangle, and hill country. Peak season around Christmas–New Year.
  • May–September: east coast beaches (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay — also peak surf season) and the cultural triangle, which sits in a dry zone.
  • October–November: inter-monsoon weeks with short afternoon downpours island-wide; quieter and cheaper, still very travelable.
  • Whale watching in Mirissa is best roughly November to April; Kandy's famous Esala Perahera festival falls in July or August.

Hill country and the cultural triangle

Nuwara Eliya and Ella are pleasant year-round but markedly cooler than the coast — evenings can drop below 10°C, so pack a warm layer. The cultural triangle around Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Anuradhapura is one of the driest parts of the island and can be visited in any season; carry water and start early to beat the heat.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a bad time to visit Sri Lanka?

Not really. Because the two monsoons hit opposite coasts at different times, you can plan a great trip in any month by choosing the right side of the island. October and November are the most changeable weeks island-wide.

When is peak tourist season in Sri Lanka?

December to March on the south and west coasts, with the busiest and most expensive weeks around Christmas and New Year. Book accommodation and the hill country train to Ella well ahead in this window.

When is the best time for surfing?

Arugam Bay on the east coast peaks roughly May to September. The southern breaks around Weligama and Hikkaduwa are best from about November to April.
