For ten months, the answer to 'Can I take the train from Colombo to Kandy?' was simply no. Cyclone Ditwah, which struck Sri Lanka in late November 2025, damaged the Upcountry railway line at more than a hundred locations, cutting rail links from Rambukkana all the way to Badulla.
On Friday 2 October 2026, that changed. Sri Lanka Railways restored regular services from Colombo Fort to Peradeniya and Gampola, and the first trains climbed the Kadugannawa incline again that afternoon.
It is a genuine milestone, and the most important improvement for travellers since the Nanu Oya to Ella section reopened earlier in the year. But it is not yet the full line. Trains do not reach Kandy station itself, because the river bridge at Peradeniya is still being restored. And between Gampola and Ella there are still two closed sections, which means the famous Colombo to Ella train ride remains impossible end to end.
This update sets out exactly which sections are running as of 3 October 2026, which are not, what the authorities have said about the rest, and — most usefully — how to combine train and road to reach Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Hatton, Adam's Peak and Ella right now.
All of the status information below comes from Sri Lanka Railways statements reported between September and October 2026. Where official sources and secondary sources disagree, we say so.
