Best for

First-time visitors who want the greatest hits without rushing every night

Season

Best December–April (south & west coast season); works year-round with swaps

The classic loop: ancient rocks, the hill country train, a leopard safari, and a beach finish. It moves quickly but hits every icon Sri Lanka is famous for.

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Arrive — Negombo

Land at Colombo airport and overnight in beachside Negombo, 20 minutes away. Recover from the flight with a lagoon-side seafood dinner.

  2. Day 2

    Sigiriya & Dambulla

Drive to the cultural triangle. Climb Sigiriya's rock fortress in the late afternoon light, or save it for sunrise and visit the Dambulla cave temples today.

  3. Day 3

    Kandy

Continue to the hill capital via a spice-country drive. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and walk the lake at dusk.

  4. Day 4

    Scenic train to Ella

Drive from Kandy through tea country to Nanu Oya, then board the famous hill country train for its most scenic stretch to Ella (through trains from Kandy are currently suspended). Evening at a viewpoint café.

  5. Day 5

Ella — Nine Arches & Little Adam's Peak

Morning walk to Nine Arches Bridge for a passing train, then the easy Little Adam's Peak hike. Afternoon at leisure or a cooking class.

  6. Day 6

    Yala safari, then the coast

Early drive south for an afternoon jeep safari in Yala National Park — leopards, elephants, and crocodiles — then continue to the beach at Mirissa.

  7. Day 7

    Mirissa & Galle, depart

Morning on Mirissa's palm-lined beach (whale watching in season), a golden-hour walk through Galle Fort, then the expressway back to the airport.

Route tips

  • Book the Nanu Oya–Ella train's reserved seats as soon as booking opens (~30 days out); check current service status, as through trains from Kandy are suspended.
  • Do Sigiriya at sunrise or late afternoon — midday heat on the rock is brutal.
  • This route works in reverse (beaches first) if you land late or want to end in the hills.
