December is when many people first think of visiting Sri Lanka. Europe is cold, the south coast is turning dry, and Christmas holidays give families time to travel.
But Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons that hit different parts of the island at different times. In December, one side of the country is usually sunny while the other side is usually wet. Picking the right region matters more than picking the right week.
This guide explains, in plain words, what December 2026 is likely to be like: where to go, where to avoid, which dates are busiest, what is open or closed, and what changed after Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025.
We also tell you who December does not suit. Honest advice helps you plan better than a list of perfect beach photos.
Кратко
- Best regions in December: west coast, south coast, Galle, Mirissa and the Cultural Triangle (with some showers)
- Wettest regions: east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay), Jaffna and the Ella/Uva side of the hills
- Busiest dates: about 20 December to 5 January, with higher hotel prices
- Unduvap Poya falls on Wednesday 23 December 2026; Adam's Peak season traditionally starts on this day
- Blue whale season off Mirissa is underway, and Yala's main zones reopened on 16 October 2026
- No direct Kandy to Ella train yet; plan the hill country by road plus the Nanu Oya to Ella train
