Sri Lanka in December 2026: An Honest Guide to Weather, Crowds, Prices and What's Open

December is when many people first think of visiting Sri Lanka. Europe is cold, the south coast is turning dry, and Christmas holidays give families time to travel.

But Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons that hit different parts of the island at different times. In December, one side of the country is usually sunny while the other side is usually wet. Picking the right region matters more than picking the right week.

This guide explains, in plain words, what December 2026 is likely to be like: where to go, where to avoid, which dates are busiest, what is open or closed, and what changed after Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025.

We also tell you who December does not suit. Honest advice helps you plan better than a list of perfect beach photos.

L'essentiel

  • Best regions in December: west coast, south coast, Galle, Mirissa and the Cultural Triangle (with some showers)
  • Wettest regions: east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay), Jaffna and the Ella/Uva side of the hills
  • Busiest dates: about 20 December to 5 January, with higher hotel prices
  • Unduvap Poya falls on Wednesday 23 December 2026; Adam's Peak season traditionally starts on this day
  • Blue whale season off Mirissa is underway, and Yala's main zones reopened on 16 October 2026
  • No direct Kandy to Ella train yet; plan the hill country by road plus the Nanu Oya to Ella train

December Weather by Region

In December, the northeast monsoon is active. This usually brings rain to the north, the east coast, and the eastern side of the central hills. The west and south coasts are usually drier, though showers still happen.

West coast (Negombo, Colombo, Bentota): generally improving through December, with sunshine and occasional afternoon or evening showers. The sea usually becomes calmer as the month goes on.

South coast (Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Tangalle): this is the classic December beach area. Expect warm days, mostly calm seas, and some short showers.

Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa): warm and green, with a chance of heavy showers. It is still very visitable; plan climbs for the early morning.

Hill country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya): cool and often misty. Nuwara Eliya nights can be cold. The Ella and Haputale side (Uva) often gets more rain and cloud in December.

East coast (Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay) and Jaffna: usually the wet season. Many beach businesses in Arugam Bay are quiet or closed. The sea can be rough.

Weather is never guaranteed. Climate patterns such as El Niño can shift rainfall from year to year.

What Last December's Cyclone Means for You

Cyclone Ditwah hit Sri Lanka in late November 2025. It caused severe floods and landslides, especially in the hill country, and damaged the famous upcountry railway.

Late-year storms in the Bay of Bengal are not rare, but a storm of that strength is not something that happens every year. It is a risk to be aware of, not a reason to cancel.

Practical steps help: buy travel insurance that covers weather disruption, keep one or two flexible days in your plan, and follow updates from the Department of Meteorology and the Disaster Management Centre.

If heavy rain warnings are issued for the hills, avoid mountain roads at night and do not hike on steep trails until conditions improve.

Key December 2026 Dates

According to the Government of Sri Lanka's 2026 holiday calendar, Unduvap Full Moon Poya Day is on Wednesday 23 December 2026, and Christmas Day is on Friday 25 December 2026. Both are public and bank holidays.

On every Poya day, the sale of alcohol is not allowed in most places, and many shops close. Some hotels may not serve alcohol either. Plan celebrations around it.

Christmas Day is the second public holiday that week. Banks will be closed on both days, so withdraw cash in advance.

The New Year period (31 December and 1 January) is a big celebration in Colombo and beach towns. Expect parties, fireworks and very busy roads.

The busiest travel window is roughly 20 December to 5 January. This is when hotel prices are highest and the best places sell out first.

Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) Season Begins

The Adam's Peak pilgrimage season traditionally starts on Unduvap Poya in December and ends at Vesak in May. In 2026, Unduvap Poya falls on 23 December.

When the season opens, the path lights are switched on, tea and food stalls open along the route, and thousands of pilgrims climb through the night to see sunrise from the summit.

If you plan to climb in late December, be ready for crowds, especially on weekends and holidays. Starting earlier at night can help, but queues near the top are common.

December weather on the peak can be cold, wet and windy. Bring a warm layer, a rain jacket, and good shoes. Respect that this is a sacred site for Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians.

Whales, Safaris and Wildlife in December

December is part of the main whale watching season off Mirissa on the south coast, which generally runs from about November to April. Blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins are possible, though sightings are never guaranteed.

Choose operators who keep a respectful distance from whales and do not chase them. Boats leave early in the morning and trips usually last several hours. Take seasickness tablets if you need them.

Yala National Park's Zones 1 and 2 reopened to visitors on 16 October 2026, after a temporary closure from 14 September for dry weather and road maintenance, according to the Department of Wildlife Conservation.

December safaris in Yala and Udawalawe can be green and beautiful after the rains. Short showers can make some tracks muddy, but most safaris run normally.

Elephant viewing at Minneriya and Kaudulla is usually better later in the dry season (around July to September), so do not expect large gatherings in December.

Getting Around: Trains, Roads and Transfers

The biggest change from earlier years is the hill country train. As of early November 2026, no direct Kandy to Ella train is running because of repairs after Cyclone Ditwah.

Trains from Colombo now run as far as Peradeniya, near Kandy. The scenic section from Nanu Oya to Ella and Badulla is open. Most travellers go by road from Kandy to Nanu Oya and then take the train to Ella.

The coastal railway from Colombo to Galle and Matara is a useful, cheap option for the south coast in December.

Roads are busy over Christmas and New Year, and the Southern Expressway can have long queues at exits on peak days. Start early.

Book private drivers and popular transfers early in December. Good drivers are often fully booked during the holidays.

Prices and When to Book

December, especially the second half, is the most expensive time for beach hotels on the south and west coasts. Popular boutique places can be booked out months in advance.

If your dates are flexible, the first two weeks of December are often calmer and cheaper than the Christmas to New Year period.

Some hotels set minimum stays or require special gala dinners on 24 and 31 December. Read the booking terms before you pay.

Entry fees for major heritage sites are charged in US dollars or the rupee equivalent and do not usually change by season. For example, Sigiriya's foreign visitor entry is USD 35 according to the Central Cultural Fund's current pricing.

A Simple December Route That Follows the Sun

A route that follows December weather usually starts inland and finishes on the south coast.

Start with 3 to 4 nights in the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa). Then go to Kandy for 1 to 2 nights.

Travel by road to Nuwara Eliya for a night, take the morning train from Nanu Oya to Ella, and spend 2 nights in Ella.

Head south via Udawalawe or Yala for a safari, then spend your final 4 to 5 nights on the south coast around Mirissa, Tangalle or Galle.

This order puts you on the beach for Christmas or New Year, when the south coast weather is usually at its best.

Who December Suits, and Who It Doesn't

December is great for travellers who want beaches on the south and west coasts, families with school holidays, whale watchers, and anyone who wants a festive atmosphere.

December is less ideal if your main goal is the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay or Pasikudah). Those areas are best from around May to September.

It is also not ideal if you want quiet, empty places and low prices. Late December is the busiest and most expensive period of the year in many coastal areas.

If you are a surfer, the south coast has waves in December, but Arugam Bay's main surf season is in the middle of the year.

If you want clear views in Ella every day, January to March often gives better odds.

What to Pack for December

Light, breathable clothes for the coast and lowlands.

A warm fleece or jacket for Nuwara Eliya, Horton Plains and Adam's Peak, where nights and early mornings can be cold.

A light rain jacket or umbrella, because showers are possible everywhere.

Clothes that cover shoulders and knees for temples and sacred sites, plus easy-to-remove shoes.

Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent. Mosquitoes are more active after rain.
