Is the Kandy to Ella Train Running? Hill Country Rail Status for the 2026/27 Season

No train runs all the way from Kandy to Ella right now. But the most beautiful stretch, Nanu Oya to Ella, is open again. Here is exactly how the line works for the 2026/27 season and how to plan around the gaps.

Is the Kandy to Ella Train Running? Hill Country Rail Status for the 2026/27 Season

The train from Kandy to Ella is often called one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world. For many travellers it is the main reason they visit Sri Lanka's hill country.

In late November 2025, Cyclone Ditwah caused landslides, washouts and bridge damage along this line. Since then, sections have reopened one by one, and online information has become confusing. Some booking sites still sell full Kandy to Ella tickets that cannot be used.

This guide gives you the plain answer as of 2 November 2026, based on announcements from Sri Lanka Railways reported in national newspapers. We also explain where reports disagree, because guessing is worse than saying we are not sure.

The good news is simple. The prettiest part of the journey, between Nanu Oya (near Nuwara Eliya) and Ella, is running again. With one road transfer, you can still have the experience most people come for.

Kurzüberblick

  • No direct Kandy to Ella train is running as of early November 2026
  • Nanu Oya to Ella to Badulla, the most scenic stretch, reopened on 20 June 2026
  • Colombo Fort to Peradeniya (and Gampola, by some reports) restarted on 2 October 2026
  • Kandy station itself is still cut off while bridges near Peradeniya are repaired
  • Official targets for full reopening have slipped more than once, so do not build a fixed plan around them
  • The simple workaround: travel by road from Kandy to Nanu Oya, then take the train to Ella

The Short Answer: What Is Running Right Now

As of 2 November 2026, you cannot board a train in Kandy and ride it to Ella.

Here is the line, section by section, from Colombo towards Badulla.

Colombo Fort to Peradeniya: running again since 2 October 2026, after about ten months of suspension. The Department of Railways said 103 locations between Rambukkana and Gampola were damaged and repaired.

Peradeniya to Kandy: closed. Kandy station is not connected to the restored services because bridges on this short stretch are still being repaired.

Gampola to Nanu Oya (through Nawalapitiya and Hatton): not running as one continuous service. Some local and isolated trains have run on parts of this stretch at different times, but there is no reliable through journey for travellers.

Nanu Oya to Ella and Badulla: running since 20 June 2026. This includes the famous views around Pattipola, Haputale, Demodara and Nine Arches Bridge.

What Happened to the Line

Cyclone Ditwah struck Sri Lanka at the end of November 2025. Heavy rain caused landslides, earth slips and washed-away track along the Colombo to Badulla line.

National reporting described damage at more than 200 locations along the route, three tunnels blocked by debris, and a badly damaged railway bridge over the Mahaweli River at Peradeniya, known locally as the Black Bridge (Kalu Palama).

One of the bridge's support pillars tilted after floodwater undercut it. Engineers had to stabilise it before trains could cross safely.

Repairs have been done in phases, starting from both ends of the line. That is why the far end (Nanu Oya to Badulla) and the Colombo end (to Peradeniya) opened first, while the middle and Kandy remain closed.

When Will Kandy to Ella Fully Reopen?

Nobody can give a firm date yet, and we would rather tell you that clearly.

Earlier in 2026, officials targeted full restoration of the upcountry line by 31 December 2026. In September 2026, a railway engineer said Colombo to Kandy services were expected in October. That did not happen: services restarted only as far as Peradeniya.

In early October 2026, a railway Superintendent Engineer told the Sunday Times that if a damaged bridge near Kandy could be fixed quickly, the Kandy service would resume by February 2027.

Our honest view: if your trip is between now and February 2027, plan as if Kandy and the middle section will stay closed. If the line reopens earlier, that is a bonus, not something your itinerary depends on.

If you are travelling from March 2027 onward, check again closer to your dates. We will update this page when Sri Lanka Railways announces a confirmed timetable.

Why Online Information Disagrees

If you search for this topic, you will find different dates and claims. Here are the main conflicts we found, so you are not confused.

Nanu Oya to Badulla reopening date: the Sunday Times reported the first Podi Menike service left Nanu Oya on 20 June 2026. Some travel websites say 18 July 2026. We use 20 June because it comes from contemporary national news coverage of the first train.

Gampola: one report said services would run to Gampola from 2 October 2026, while another quoted the Transport Minister saying trains would operate only to Peradeniya. Treat Gampola as uncertain and ask at the station.

Starting point of the scenic train: earlier in 2026, before the Nanu Oya to Ambewela landslide repair was finished, trains started at Ambewela. Some older pages still say this. Since 20 June 2026, trains run from Nanu Oya.

Booking sites: some third-party sites still show Kandy to Ella as a normal route. If a ticket says it departs from Kandy, it is not usable for a direct ride right now.

The Best Workaround: Road to Nanu Oya, Then Train to Ella

For most travellers, the easiest plan is to travel by road from Kandy to Nanu Oya, then take the train from Nanu Oya to Ella.

The road journey from Kandy to Nanu Oya usually takes around 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic, rain and stops. The road climbs past tea estates and waterfalls, so it is scenic in its own right.

You can use a private car with a driver, a taxi, or public buses (Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, then a short tuk-tuk to Nanu Oya station). Buses are cheap but slower and harder with big luggage.

A good plan is to stay one or two nights in Nuwara Eliya first. Then catch a morning train from Nanu Oya the next day. This avoids rushing and gives you a better chance of clear morning views.

The Nanu Oya to Ella ride usually takes around 3 hours or a little more. Trains in Sri Lanka are often late, so do not plan anything time-critical on arrival.

Other Ways to Plan Your Route

Option 1, Colombo to Ella without Kandy: drive or take a bus from Colombo towards Nuwara Eliya, then take the train from Nanu Oya. This works well if Kandy is not a priority for you.

Option 2, the reverse direction: go to Ella first by road (for example from the south coast), then take the train from Ella up to Nanu Oya. Many travellers say the uphill direction feels less crowded, though this depends on the day.

Option 3, Ella to Badulla: if you only want a short taste, ride from Ella towards Demodara or Badulla. This short section includes the Demodara loop and passes the Nine Arches Bridge area.

Option 4, skip the train completely: if the train is full or cancelled, the road from Nuwara Eliya to Ella via Haputale or Bandarawela is very scenic. You lose the train experience but not the landscape.

Tickets and Seats: How to Book Safely

Reserved seats on the scenic trains can be booked through the official Sri Lanka Railways online seat reservation system. The system's FAQ says a maximum of five seats can be booked at one time.

Reserved seats in popular months like December to April often sell out early. Book as soon as your dates are fixed.

If reserved seats are sold out, unreserved second and third class tickets are usually sold at the station shortly before departure. These are cheap, but you may stand for part of the journey.

Be careful with resellers. Some third-party sites add large fees, and some still sell routes that are not running. Check the departure station on any ticket you buy.

Do not pay anyone on the train for 'access' to a compartment. In June 2026, the Daily Mirror reported allegations that some train guards on the Nanu Oya to Badulla section collected money from tourists. Your ticket is your entry. If someone asks for extra cash, politely decline and keep your ticket ready.

Which Side to Sit On and What You Will See

Going from Nanu Oya towards Ella, many travellers prefer the right-hand side for the big valley views, though good views appear on both sides at different points.

Highlights include tea estates around Nanu Oya and Ambewela, Pattipola (the highest station on the line), the long Pattipola tunnel area, the Haputale ridge, and the green valleys before Ella.

After Ella, the line continues to Demodara, where it loops around a hill and passes under itself, and then to Badulla.

In December, mist and rain are common on the Ella side. The views can be magical but sometimes completely white. Morning trains often have a better chance of clear windows.

Stay Safe on the Train

Photos of travellers hanging out of open doors are popular online, but they are dangerous. Tunnels, poles and sudden curves pass very close to the train.

Keep your body inside the carriage and hold your phone or camera firmly. Many phones are dropped from doors every season.

Do not walk on the tracks for photos, including at Nine Arches Bridge, unless you are clearly in a safe, permitted area and no train is due.

After heavy rain, services may be delayed or stopped for safety checks. If staff stop the train, it is for a reason. Be patient.

Who Should Not Rely on the Train This Season

The train is not the right plan for everyone this winter. Consider road transport instead if any of these apply to you.

You have a tight schedule with a flight or a safari time to meet. Delays are common, and sections can be suspended after heavy rain.

You are travelling with very young children or someone with limited mobility, and no reserved seat is available. Standing for three hours in a crowded carriage is hard.

You only have one day for the whole hill country. In that case, a private driver from Kandy to Ella via Nuwara Eliya gives you more control.

Saying this clearly is part of good planning. The hill country is beautiful by road too.

Reisetipps

  • Check the latest status a few days before travel and again on the day
  • Book reserved seats only through the official railway system or at the station
  • Do not buy tickets that start from Kandy until a through service is confirmed
  • Never pay cash to staff for compartment access
  • Take a morning train for better views in rainy months
  • Carry a light jacket; the carriages get cold at higher stations
  • Bring water and snacks; vendors are not always on board
  • Keep luggage small if you plan to travel unreserved
  • Do not hang out of doors or walk on the tracks
  • Leave buffer time before flights or safaris
  • Download offline maps, as signal drops in tunnels and valleys
  • Have a road-transport backup if heavy rain is forecast
