Palm-lined beach at Mirissa on Sri Lanka's south coast

Beaches & Wildlife in 5 Days

Duration

5 days

Best for

Short-stay visitors, stopovers, and repeat travelers focused on the coast

Season

Best November–April on the south coast

No long transfers, no packing every night — just the south coast's beaches, a world-class safari, and one perfect fort town.

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Arrive → Galle

Take the southern expressway straight from the airport to Galle (about 2 hours). Sunset on the fort ramparts, dinner in a 300-year-old streetscape.

  2. Day 2

    Mirissa

Whale watching at dawn (November–April), then an afternoon of beach time and the famous Coconut Tree Hill photo stop.

  3. Day 3

    Yala safari

Drive east along the coast for an afternoon jeep safari in Yala — the best leopard odds on the island — overnight near the park.

  4. Day 4

    Weligama surf

Back west for a beginner-friendly surf lesson in Weligama's gentle bay, then a lazy evening of south-coast seafood.

  5. Day 5

    Beach morning, depart

A final swim at Unawatuna or Jungle Beach, then the expressway back to the airport in about two and a half hours.

Route tips

  • This route needs no internal flights and only one long drive (to Yala and back).
  • In May–September, run the same idea on the east coast around Trincomalee and Arugam Bay.
  • Book whale-watching with a licensed operator the day before; sea conditions can shift departures.
