History
Ambalangoda has been the heartland of Sri Lanka's traditional mask carving and devil-dance (kolam and thovil) traditions for generations, with family workshops passing the craft down since the 19th century. The town grew as a coastal trading and fishing settlement on the Galle road, and its mask museums and workshops remain the island's best place to see the tradition alive.
