Sri Lanka Highlights in 10 Days
Duration
10 days
Best for
Travelers who want the classic route at a humane pace, with tea country added
Season
Best December–April; hill country is pleasant year-round
Everything in the 7-day classic, plus real time in tea country and two full beach days — the pace most travelers wish they had booked.
Day by day
Days 1–2
Negombo → Sigiriya & Dambulla
Ease in at Negombo, then two nights in the cultural triangle: the Sigiriya climb, Dambulla's cave temples, and a village lunch or Minneriya elephant safari.
Day 3
Kandy
Temple of the Tooth, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, and an evening cultural dance performance.
Days 4–5
Nuwara Eliya — tea country
Drive into the high country. Tour a working tea factory, walk plantation trails, and wrap up in a blanket — evenings here are genuinely cold.
Days 6–7
Ella
The most scenic stretch of railway (Nanu Oya to Ella), then Nine Arches Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, and Ella's café scene.
Day 8
Udawalawe safari
Descend from the hills for an elephant-rich safari in Udawalawe — more reliable sightings and fewer jeeps than Yala.
Days 9–10
Mirissa & Galle
Two nights on the south coast: beach time, whale watching in season, and a sunset circuit of Galle Fort's ramparts before flying out.
Route tips
- Swap Udawalawe for Yala if leopards are the priority; keep Udawalawe for elephants and calm.
- Nuwara Eliya nights drop below 10°C — pack a proper warm layer.
- May–September? Flip the beach leg to the east coast: Trincomalee or Arugam Bay.
