Complete Sri Lanka in 14 Days
Duration
14 days
Best for
Travelers who want the full sweep — ancient capitals to surf beaches — without a single rushed day
Season
Best December–April; the cultural triangle is dry-zone and works year-round
Two weeks buys the whole story: all three ancient capitals, the full hill country by rail, a proper safari, and days — not hours — on the coast.
Day by day
Days 1–2
Negombo → Anuradhapura
Recover from the flight, then explore the island's first great capital by bicycle — colossal dagobas, monastery ruins, and the sacred Bodhi tree.
Day 3
Polonnaruwa
The compact medieval capital: the Gal Vihara rock Buddhas, royal palace ruins, and ancient reservoirs. Evening in the Sigiriya area.
Days 4–5
Sigiriya & Dambulla
Sunrise on the Lion Rock, Dambulla's painted caves, and an afternoon elephant safari at Minneriya in season.
Days 6–7
Kandy
Temple of the Tooth, Peradeniya gardens, hill walks around the lake, and time to simply be in Sri Lanka's cultural heart.
Days 8–9
Tea country — Nuwara Eliya & the rails
Drive up through cloud forest and tea estates, tour a working factory, and spend a crisp night in 'Little England'.
Days 10–11
Ella
Arrive on the scenic Nanu Oya–Ella train — the prettiest stretch of the hill country line — then Nine Arches Bridge, Little Adam's Peak or the bigger Ella Rock hike, waterfalls, and the island's best café strip.
Day 12
Yala National Park
Full safari day — dawn and dusk drives give the best odds of a leopard, with elephants and sloth bears in between.
Days 13–14
South coast — Mirissa, Weligama & Galle
Finish slow: beach mornings, a first surf lesson at Weligama, whales in season, and a farewell dinner inside Galle Fort.
Route tips
- Hire a driver-guide for the cultural triangle leg; distances between ruins are cycling- or vehicle-scale.
- Buy the cultural triangle's headline tickets with cash and check current foreigner prices ahead.
- With 14 days you can add Jaffna or the east coast — ask a local guide to rebalance the route.
