Surfers at golden hour on the point at Arugam Bay

East Coast Summer: Arugam Bay & Trincomalee in 7 Days

Duration

7 days

Best for

Summer travelers (May–September) — when the east coast is calm, sunny, and at its absolute best

Season

Purpose-built for May–September, the east coast's dry season

Everyone asks if Sri Lanka is 'ruined' by monsoon in July and August. The answer: the island has two monsoons on opposite coasts — while the southwest gets rain, the east coast is flat, turquoise, and sunny. This route is the summer Sri Lanka most visitors never find.

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Arrive → cultural triangle

Break the cross-island drive at Sigiriya or Dambulla. Climb the rock at sunset if you have the energy — summer light on the plains is spectacular.

  2. Days 2–3

    Trincomalee & Nilaveli

Continue east to Trinco. Two days of Nilaveli and Uppuveli's white-sand beaches, snorkeling at Pigeon Island National Park, Koneswaram temple on the cliff, and whale watching — the east coast's season runs May–September.

  3. Day 4

    Batticaloa lagoon

Drive south along the coast to Batticaloa: the lagoon, the old Dutch fort, and the calmest stretch of the east coast highway. Kallady beach at dusk.

  4. Days 5–6

    Arugam Bay

The island's surf capital in peak season. Surf or take a lesson at Main Point and Whiskey Point, lagoon safaris at dawn for crocodiles and elephants, and the best travelers' scene in summer Sri Lanka.

  5. Day 7

    Return via an elephant safari

Head back west with a late-afternoon stop at Minneriya or Kaudulla for 'The Gathering' — hundreds of wild elephants converge around the tanks in the dry months (roughly July–October) — then overnight near Habarana or continue to the airport.

Route tips

  • Sri Lanka has two monsoons: the southwest monsoon (May–September) hits Colombo, Galle, and Mirissa, while the east coast stays dry — plan by coast, not by country.
  • Arugam Bay's surf season peaks June–August; beginners should stick to Whiskey Point and Baby Point.
  • The Gathering at Minneriya is one of Asia's great wildlife events and it only happens in these months.
  • Summer is also perfect for Jaffna and the north — add 2–3 days if you have them.
